Reinvention – The Importance of Embracing Change

Throughout my 20 year career I have changed “jobs” for a variety of reasons.  Whether it was due to boredom, maybe I found that the job just wan’t the right fit for me, or I found a better opportunity I have never limited myself to searching for a new opportunity in the same role that I was in my last position.  Instead I have chosen to “reinvent” myself throughout my career.  Time to Re-Invent - Clock

I started out my career as a programmer/analyst and then branched out into business analysis which provided the opportunity to learn about the functional/business reasoning behind the systems and applications that I was working on.  I then decided that my strengths really were found in the management of teams, so I pursued roles in project and program management.  With each transition I consciously made the decision to expand beyond my comfort zone and build my skills.

Change is not something that everyone is comfortable with, but change is vitally important for moving yourself and your career forward. I would encourage anyone who feels as if they are trapped in a dead-end job, to look beyond their comfort zone in their next career search.  If you are technical, look for a position where you can leverage your technical skills in a functional position.  If you work in the insurance industry, look for opportunities in banking.  The bottom line is do not allow your career to stagnate because you are comfortable.  Do not be afraid of reinventing yourself and most importantly, embrace change!
